Hanami: Beyond the Blooms pushes the limits of the cherry blossom experience, inviting visitors to enter an immersive world of spring re-imagined. Now an annual tradition, ARTECHOUSE’s cherry blossom-inspired installation continues to celebrate springtime and women in the arts and tech. This seasonal installation continues with the 2020 ARTECHOUSE theme of exploring the role of science in art and technology.

A centuries-old Japanese tradition of blossom viewing takes on a whole new abstract interpretive meaning as hand-made ink illustrations by Yuko Shimizu are transformed digitally to follow vibrant cherry blossom flowers on an exciting and interactive journey through land, sea, and air.

Hanami: Beyond the Blooms transports visitors into a new tale of spring as they contemplate the renewal and chaos of the season, engage with centuries-old traditions and explore the interconnectedness of the natural world. Shimizu’s vivid illustrations are brought to life with cutting-edge interactivity, as powerful winds sweep flowers across the sky, birds take flight, and vibrant petals fall gently. Traditional taiko drums give way to surreal paths of hand-illustrated cherry blossom trees and a Japanese-inspired environment where visitors can welcome spring. Hanami beautifully shows how technology and code can combine seamlessly with illustration and nature to breathe new life into this familiar time of year, allowing visitors to enjoy the thrills and beauty of a seasonal phenomenon beyond its limited organic time-span.”
